THE FORTRESSES

Here, at 579 meters, it opens a breathtaking view overlooking on a real Little Canyon, the gorge of the river Bussentino, geological site of international interest and importance. Then following the route “The country shows,” agrees to stop in Truzzo area, not far away, to observe the lookout tower Built-in, in medieval times, in the city in defense of the borough.

This outpost had a highly strategic function within a highly evolved system of control of traffic along the axes river the downstream of the limestone headland on which stands Tortorella. It was in fact in line with a turret , where now stands the bell tower of the church of San Vinto, connected in turn with the bulwark of Casteddaro, down his throat , called  “Scontratore”, the waters of the Bussentino and Gerdanasio. All this was a defensive mechanism unique to the area, which is now possible to  relive  through the Path of the Fortresses.

The path of fortresses wedges into the gorge of the river Bussentino, through ravines, sheer slopes, and then flows – downstream of the hill of Tortorella, until it crosses the Gerdanaso river; along the river the path goes up in Rupazzi area and reaches the track of Selecia wich descends from Porta de lo Cantone. The route winds through the rocky gorge digged by the Bussentino stream and comes 300 m further down to the river.

Another easily accessible element from here is the ancient Mill of San Vito located in the Rocche di Tortorella, whose origins are unknown. The geographical position, the vestiges of the structures, the functional organization of the building postpone its date of erection to the 12th century AD. Located in a bend of the Rio Casaletto defined by a ridge of limestone, along the left bank, at about 280 m.s.l.m. now almost buried by the vegetation and obliterated by the river.
